Meeting Francis Egly

When people talk about champagne, some evoke prestige, luxury, and grand houses. I, however, seek the truth , and it has the serene face of Francis Egly. He is a man who doesn't speak of wines , but of land and time .

The journey begins in Ambonnay , this Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims. Upon arriving at the estate, there is no pomp and circumstance, just a sense of seriousness . Francis cultivates nearly 12 hectares , the majority of which are planted with Pinot Noir , which he treats with great care.

These vines have a soul, that's for sure. You can feel that they are respected , not just managed. They plunge their roots into the chalk and clay, without ever being disturbed by chemicals.

🛠️ Time: more than a method, a philosophy.

Francis is not a winemaker in a hurry. He understands that true wealth is measured in years . Forget the race for productivity; here, they work with the clock of long aging in barrels . It is the waiting , the slow process, that gives his champagnes their unique depth and substance .

In its cuvées—whether the remarkably dense Blanc de Noirs or its Extra Brut Grand Cru —there is very little dosage. The wine speaks for itself, without artifice. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined, as naturally as possible. For me, Egly-Ouriet champagne is the most honest wine one can drink: it doesn't lie about its origins, it doesn't cheat about its age.

🤝 An exchange with a winemaker.

What I love about visiting him is the atmosphere of concentration . It's like entering the workshop of a master craftsman working on a masterpiece. There's a quiet strength in his gestures, in the way he looks at you. He's not trying to convince anyone, but simply to share what he has discovered : the purest expression of Ambonnay.

And that authenticity is what touches me most deeply. This champagne is a luxury of truth , created by a man who has made respect for time the rule of his craft. And to whom we are ready, without hesitation, to give our full attention.
