Taste like a pro: our simple tips
Share
You don't need to be an oenologist to truly appreciate wine. With a few easy-to-remember basics, you can learn to taste like a pro and get the most out of every bottle. Whether you're curious, a wine connoisseur, or simply looking for new experiences, these tips are for you.
1. Observe the color of the wine
Tasting begins with the eyes. Pour a little wine into your glass and tilt it slightly. Its color already gives you clues: a deep red can indicate strength, while a light white often evokes freshness. Clarity, reflections, and brilliance are also signs of quality that shouldn't be overlooked.
2. Smell the aromas
The nose is one of the taster's best tools. Start by smelling the wine without swirling it, then start again after swirling it gently in the glass. You'll discover a whole range of aromas: red fruits, flowers, spices, woody notes... Wine speaks; just listen with your nose.
3. Taste carefully
Take a small sip and let the wine roll around in your mouth for a few seconds. Try to distinguish the main flavors: acidity, sugar, tannins, bitterness. Then note the length in the mouth, that is, how long the aromas linger after swallowing or spitting out.
4. Trust yourself
There are no right or wrong answers when tasting. What you experience is unique. The more you taste, the more you'll refine your cues. And above all, enjoy yourself. Tasting a wine is, above all, savoring a moment, an emotion, a story.
In short: tasting like a pro isn't about complex technique, but about curiosity, attention, and pleasure. Take the time to look, smell, taste... and you'll see wine differently.
